This has quickly become the kids most favorite way to start our day! I put out different art materials and give everyone 1 piece of paper and some time and freedom to create what they want. We have some quiet music playing and the kids are free to move from table to table using different types of mediums. We love to wrap up by bringing our artwork to the circle to share our thinking. Kids love using their creativity and I love seeing their thinking made visible.
After reading the book My Garden by Kevin Henkes, kids designed their own imaginary gardens just like the author. After planning and discussing with a partner the kids used a variety of art materials to bring their gardens to life. When they were all done creating these amazing designers brought their gardens to the circle to share their thinking. Ask your child to share their designs and their thinking with you.
We have some very avid experienced gardeners in this class. The pumpkins, carrots and sunflower seeds have planted for a new season of growing.
What do you do when it rains all day and the playground equipment is too wet to play on? Well, you get creative! Chalk plus water made for some great experimenting and creativity.
What amazing resources and people we have in downtown Brighton! We explored the many different shops on Main Street, talked to construction workers, landscapers, shop owners and dog walkers. So many interesting people and activities going on in our town every day. We enjoyed the playground and even though it was chilly we found nature all around the pond. Ask your child to tell you about Brighton or better yet go for another walk downtown and let your child be the tour guide.
This week we explored shapes both inside and outside. We built shapes with toothpicks and play dough, used tangrams to explore how different shapes put together can make new shapes, played shape bingo and experimented with shape stencils.
We celebrated May Day by planting flowers and delivering them to the neighborhood next to Spencer School. We had a lot of fun and really appreciate you donating all the supplies.
We used a thinking routine called Zoom In to look at a small part of a picture in order to notice details and make a hypothesis. After discussing with a partner we made our own recordings of the Earth. Ask your child how many continents the Earth has and what we call a model of the Earth.
